I make cotton underscarves with buns in the back. They are sewn into place so I can just slip them on. They keep the top scarf in place and make it possible to wear fabrics that wouldn't be comfortable next to my head.

I recently discovered that to really bulk up a bun, you can also tie a thin Israeli style scarf into the hair band and then just wrap it around from there. This allows more of the scarf to be in the bulk and is not as hot!

Selkie - Sounds very clever! In terms of wearing uncomfortable fabrics, almost all scarves from http://www.thestyleunderground.com are lined in lightweight, breathable, slip-resistant cotton.

Melissa - Brilliant idea! Tips for staying cool in the heat are very helpful.
